Client: Massachusetts Electric
Project: Focus Groups on Electric Rates and Supplier Choice

Massachusetts Electric (a subsidiary of National Grid) wanted to assess customers’ experiences with various types of electric rates and with the ability to choose their electric supplier. NMR conducted four focus groups (two with residential customers and two with commercial customers) to assess these issues.

Client: Northeast Energy Efficiency Partnerships, Inc.
Project: Characterization of the Residential Market for ENERGY STAR Windows in the Northeast

Working under a subcontract to Quantec, NMR provided an assessment of the current market for ENERGY STAR Windows in the Northeast (New England, New York, and New Jersey) in order to help identify, plan, and develop a market transformation ENERGY STAR windows initiative.

Client: Long Island Power Authority/KeySpan
Project: Baseline and Follow-up Study of the Residential Central Air Conditioning Market

Lynn Hoefgen initiated the baseline study prior to founding NMR, and at LIPA’s request, continued to conduct all the analysis while at NMR; NMR is now completing a follow-up study for LIPA to assess the progress toward market transformation. Both studies involved depth interviews with manufacturers, distributors, contractors, and builders; telephone surveys of end-users who have recently installed central air conditioning; and on-site audits among residential customers with recently installed AC systems. The objectives included: estimating the efficiency of recently installed HVAC equipment and systems in residential dwellings in LIPA’s service territory (including baselines for other components of the program, such as programmable thermostats, proper sizing, refrigerant charge, and air flow); estimating values for key indicators of market effects/changes expected to result from the program; validating or refining LIPA’s assumptions about the structure of the targeted residential HVAC markets, the functioning of residential HVAC market channels, barriers to the market transformations targeted by the program, and decision-making practices of key market actors; and identifying any specific market segments or niches that offer special opportunities for the residential HVAC program.

Client: Long Island Power Authority
Project: Residential Photovoltaics Follow-up Study

The intention of this study is to assess the market effects that may be attributed to LIPA’s Solar Pioneer Program. The study includes: depth interviews with manufacturers, PV contractors, utility planners, commercial customers, and other market actors; a telephone survey of participating and non-participating homeowners; and review of other PV programs. The objectives are: to estimate values for key indicators of market changes expected to result from the program; to validate or refine LIPA’s assumptions about the structure and functioning of the rooftop solar PV market and the barriers to PV market transformation targeted by the program; and to identify any specific market segments or niches that offer special opportunities for the residential rooftop solar PV market.
